Oral Hygiene Instructions

It is very important during orthodontic treatment to be conscious of your overall dental health. Align Orthodontics recommends that while you are having orthodontic treatment, you also continue visits with your general dentist and have regular dental check ups and cleanings.

Using your Braun Oral B or manual toothbrush, brush back and forth across the braces. Brush every tooth slowly.

Angle the toothbrush towards the gumline and brush gums for 10 seconds per tooth. This will keep the gums clean, healthy and stimulated. The area between the bracket and gums are very susceptible to decay.

Angle your toothbrush under the brackets and wires to remove any food debris and plaque that may get lodged.

After brushing the outside, move to the inside and brush all the surfaces facing your tongue. Be sure to brush the chewing surfaces and your tongue as well.

Use the floss threader when flossing with braces. Feed the rigid end of the floss threader between your gum and the wire and pull floss half way through. Floss as normal, rethreading at each tooth.

Use your proxabrush once a day to remove food and plaque that get trapped between the teeth. Be sure to always point the tip of the proxabrush away from the gums.

It is vitally important to maintain excellent oral hygiene while you are having orthodontic treatment. Permanent damage to tooth enamel can occur if teeth and braces are not kept clean. You may also develop gum disease if gums are neglected.

If you or your child are having problems with cleaning or any other aspects of treatment, our clinical team will be more than willing to spend extra time with you until you and your child feel confident.
